Understanding Google Tag Manager GTM

Hello everyone, today, we are going to touch on a straightforward topic, but most people get confused about( Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics). We will denote Google Tag Manager as GTM and Google Analytics as GA. Let’s understand the primary difference first. GTM is the platform which is providing data to GA and many other third-party data analytics software such as Facebook pixels, tweeter pixels, or Snapchat pixels. And GA is the tool that helps us view the data which we obtain by integrating the code snippets on our website, app or Blogs, in such a way that it is easy for us to understand. 

As we all know, how much competitive Google is with its free tools. Google Tag Manager is a marketing free tool that is used by programmers and marketers to integrate all the tracking codes for google as well as the third-party company in one place. Just imaging managing just one tool for integration of all your tracking needs, whether it is events or clicks or percentage views or any of the stuff that you want to track. Google has come up with a timely solution to all your needs. And on the other side, Google Analytics is a free tool that you can use to analyze all the data you get from GTM. The combination of both the free tools can make a magical combination for your marketing and retargeting campaigns.

The main benefit of using Google Tags Manager is that you have to install one set of code for all the tracking needs. And that code activates the assigned tags whenever the user does some action. Now let us understand how does Google Tag Manager work. The first page of GTM will look something like this,

Here you will be asked to sign up for your account and enter your company name and the designated country to get started. Then comes the container setup, don’t get confused here with the name. The container setup is like a sub-branch when you are creating a company; you can have different containers underneath it. In the container setup, you have to select your targeted designation( Website, App both android or ios and accelerated mobile pages) and just hit create. Now the screen that you see is called the dashboard of GTM. 

Now you see a lot of options on the left side, namely, overview, tags, triggers, variables, folders, and templates. We will go through each of them, but lets first go through the steps on how to get the installation code. You will be prompted with a GTM installation code when you sign up. You have to add two pairs of codes, one in the head and another one just at the start of the body tag. If you forget to copy the code during the time of sign in, don’t worry, you can find the code in the dashboard. Just by clicking your GTM id on the dashboard header, you can get the code, and also, you can go to the admin section and choose to install GTM to get the code.

Now let’s talk briefly on the options in the GTM dashboard. The overview is just the main area where you can see all your activities and navigate through the options. The most critical choice that you will be eager to use tags. Tags are the key to your installation of all the things that will happen at your targeted destination. You can install all the types of tags, such as Google Analytics and Twitter pixels and Facebook pixels, etc.

These tags are connected with a trigger, which is the next option on our dashboard. Triggers are the action that triggers your code on a defined engagement. Let’s say, for example; I have created a tag for google analytics that is triggered every time someone comes to my landing page.

The fourth option on the dashboard is variables. These variables are the same as coding variables they store values for from the dynamic side and save them in tags. And these tags then send the data to the assigned data analysis tool.

The next option is folders, and it is as simple as it sounds. You can create your set of tags and save them in a particular folder, so they are easy to use every time. And the last option is templates; it is newly introduced in GTM. Many channels were not present in the configuration of the tag. So this is a new feature wherein you can download templates externally and install in GTM. By using these prebuilt templates saves a lot of time.
